THE BASICS OF THE RADIO EDITING PROCESS

• A radio edit refers to a modification intended to make a song suitable for radio airplay.

• Music must be edited for length, profanity and subject matter.

• Most radio edits are used for commercial singles – but can now be used for almost any song that needs certain inappropriate words removed.

• There are many reasons as to why someone would want to have the radio edited version of their song. For instance, some words come out the way they actually should sound, but for radio airplay, most of those aren’t allowed. Also, for personal use, many want the clean versions of certain songs to make a mix for a party or gathering of all ages.

• There are actually many words that can be replaced, while still getting the same point across, in order to keep the music as family friendly as possible. After all you want it to be played on the radio, so some sacrifices must be made. Consider your audience and the choice of words that would appeal to them and their families.
